When Avatar premiered in 2009, it blew away all expectations in nearly every conceivable way. Director James Cameron hadn’t released a movie since Titanic in 1997. Superhero movies tend to feature several repetitive elements. Twin Peaks was truly a profound phenomenon, both in its original run and long-awaited revival. The first two seasons were very impactful on television storytelling, structurally speaking alone. Despite the Scream series’ cultural dominance of the decade, the 90s is frequently cited as a dead-zone for horror. After the genre’s second golden era during the Reagan years, Wes Craven and Kevin Williamson gave it a self-reflexive shot in the arm, reviving the slasher with renewed sass and vigor that would last into the new millennium. It’s a general consensus among fans of the sitcom genre, that The Office was nothing short of a masterpiece. First airing on NBC in 2005, the mockumentary series was off to a bit of a rough start.
