Too Many Cooks essentially came out of nowhere in late 2014 when it was first broadcast at 4 AM on Adult Swim. Horror director Alexandre Aja finally revisited the killer animal sub-genre after nine years, since Piranha 3D. That was a fun, shamelessly indulgent movie with plenty of gore to go around. But with Crawl, he’s also incorporated all the elements of a disaster movie. This should have resulted in the equivalent of a Syfy TV movie where that concept is anything but unfamiliar. However, Aja instead proved that when he pulls back on the comedy, his deft hand for thrills can really deliver....
Marvel Studios got the film rights to the X-Men and the Fantastic Four back from 20th Century Fox recently in a landmark merger with Disney, so we can expect those characters to join the MCU in the next few years. The 2019 sequel/spin-off Men in Black: International is breathing new life to a beloved franchise that started out in 1997 and went on to endure two decades. At this point in time, the Men in Black universe has unleashed four feature films and one animated TV series that aired for four seasons. Having grossed over one billion dollars internationally at the box office, there is little reason for Sony to pump the brakes on the Men in Black series, even if a new installment has to be made for less money....

Troubled film productions usually churns out a bad product…except when it absolutely does the opposite. These are of course the hopes fans have for films like Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, a film mired in controversy and shrouded with rumors of on set problems and numerous script rewrites....
Diversity aside, the largest problem with this year’s crop of Best Actor nominations at the Academy Awards is that too few of the higher profile films this year had compelling male leads. Even among those nominated there’s the sense that many were chosen simply because the media-crafted narrative said that they were to be taken seriously, rather than for actual merit. The truth is you had to look outside the expected crop of high profile Oscar bait to find performances worth celebrating....
