Despite its drawbacks, Chris Hemsworth was able to convincingly bring life to the deity of Thor, and his aloof performance (along with mesmerizing sequences in Asgard) was able to popularize and humanize the character for new audiences....

Aladdin was always projected to win the box office over Memorial Day weekend, but it became a much bigger hit than anticipated. The latest in Disney’s recent string of live-action remakes of their animated classics, Aladdin’s prospects seemed a bit shaky during the build-up to its release, with the film generating controversy. Biopic can sometimes feel like a bad word. It can often mean that the film it describes is dry and perfunctory. Biopics are among the most standardized of genres, telling a conventional story of a person’s life. Sometimes, though, biopics can be extraordinary. They can use the characteristics of a single person to say something about a moment in time. Good biopics can be many things. Sometimes, they deviate from the standard formula, and choose to hone in on only a few moments in a person’s life....

There’s just something about dressing up like a superhero that makes people feel powerful. Many was the child who tied a sweater or a towel around their neck, forming a make-shift cape while playing pretend. Kids and adults both dress up as their favorite superheroes at Halloween. Cosplayers spend hundreds (if not thousands) of dollars assembling their super-suits for conventions and charity events. And a lucky few actors, who ultimately get paid to play pretend and dress-up for a living, get to bring these legendary characters to life....

Doctor Strange is now in theaters, and if early reviews are any indication, Marvel has again struck gold. With Benedict Cumberbatch’s mystic performance and the chops of director Scott Derrickson, the film is said to expand the Marvel Cinematic Universe the same way Strange comics did in the 1960s – psychedelics and sorcery. The former surgeon has led some of the genre’s most bizarre arcs over the years, from satanic cults and vampires to Gods and Satan himself....

This past 2016 fall season brought an entire batch of brand new shows, though most of their concepts aren’t particularly “new” to audiences. A growing trend in modern television is adapting a story from movies past which already have a built-in fan base. Though there are numerous instances in which this model has failed (the short-lived Ferris Bueller and recent Rush Hour series come to mind), there are times when basing a TV show on a film pays off....

In Avengers: Age of Ultron, we see Ultron singing to the creepily altered tune of “I’ve Got No Strings” from the 1940 Disney movie, Pinocchio. This scene not only depicts Ultron’s resemblance to a freed puppet, but it also marks the beginning of the merger between Disney and Marvel Studios. Age of Ultron was released in 2012 as the first MCU movie to be filmed under the Disney name. Since then, the Avengers, the Guardians, and most of the other on-screen Marvel characters have been under the rule of Walt Disney’s super company....

Mindy Kaling is basically superwoman. She’s starred in films and TV shows, written two New York Times best-selling memoirs and boasts writer, executive producer, and director credits. Did we mention she also created one of the funniest romcom TV shows in existence and is also a mother? While Kaling’s has had some great successes, she — like the rest of Hollywood — had to start somewhere. After decades of Spider-Man movies, TV shows, and remakes, Marvel finally hit the nail on the head with Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. The computer-animated story follows the newly recruited, Miles Morales, as he learns the ways of the Spider-verse. Under the mentorship of an aged Peter Parker, aka the original Spider-Man, Miles finds his way into alternative universes with a mix-matched group of heroes. As always, cosplayers had been the first on the scene to show their appreciation for the nearly perfect film, and a 97% rating on Rotten Tomatoes is no easy feat....
