It’s pretty crazy that Supernatural is entering its 14th season, considering that creator Eric Kripke was unsure the series would survive to even see a sophomore outing. Action has been a staple of cinema since the very beginning. In 1903, The Great Train Robbery was the first movie to utilize composite editing, on-location shooting, and a moving camera, which would all become integral to early action cinema. Recasting a successful TV show is like major surgery. Sometimes it’s absolutely necessary for the patient to survive, but it’s still risky. The need for a new performer isn’t usually because the actor wasn’t right for the role (though as you’ll see, that does happen from time to time). More often it’s what’s happening behind the scenes — personal feuds, substance problems, health issues — that gets an actor dropped.
