October is a month meant for binge-watching horror movies, and no sub-genre has proved as enduring and resonant as the slasher film. There’s nothing that can keep an audience talking long after the credits roll like a totally unexpected twist. This unforeseen turn of events can change the entire dynamic of the story, or simply provide a bit of a momentary thrill for the viewers. Whatever the case may be, more surprises in movies is usually a good thing — so long as the filmmakers have command over their material. With decades’ worth of comics to draw from, Marvel has no shortage of characters, stories, and surprises to project onto the big screen....

It seems like every movie at the theater now is a sequel, a prequel, or a reboot. People are constantly crying that creativity and new ideas are dead, with sequels being a much more prevalent because studios feel like its a much safer to greenlight a new entry in an existing franchise rather than creating something entirely new. As Disney can attest, after the (relatively) recent failures of movies like The Lone Ranger, John Carter, and Tomorrowland, sequels are a much more stable financial decision than betting on a new idea....

One of the most difficult aspects of making a movie is marketing it. To create an entire film from scratch is a very big task, so it is understandable when the creators kind of drop the ball when it comes time to market the film. But that doesn’t mean that this justifies changing the entire concept or message of a movie, in favor of marketing it in line with what is popular and trending....

These days, Hollywood seems to be all about the sequel, the prequel and the reboot, so it’s not surprising when we see popular characters popping up in numerous films or franchises. What is surprising is when an actor decides to bring an award-worthy character back to the big screen, which risks tarnishing its legacy. While it doesn’t happen often, occasionally an Oscar-nominated performer elects to return to the character that garnered them the nomination in the first place....

As Dragon Ball Super continues, we’ve seen some pretty intense fights in the series. But for any anime fan from the ‘90s, it’s the fights of Dragon Ball Z that come to mind when thinking about big confrontations.
