It’s kind of surprising what a huge, AAA franchise Far Cry has become when you consider its rather strange beginnings. The original game was developed by Crytek as a showpiece for their new CryEngine, and mostly felt like a preview for the then-upcoming centerpiece of the technology: Crysis. The character’s trademark mix of youth, soap opera, and action were a hit with audiences, ultimately netting him his own series soon after. A $1M iPhone repair scam running for more than three years has led to a Chinese man receiving a prison sentence, and being asked to pay almost $2M in restitution and penalties. Marvel fans were left devastated earlier this year when Netflix decided to cancel The Punisher after just two seasons. Ubisoft recently revealed in a financial report that a sequel to 2014’s Watch Dogs is indeed in the works, with a projected launch coming somewhere before April 2017. The original was the first next-gen game many got excited about, boasting insane visuals and an uber realistic world. The final product turned out to be disappointing, but many believe Ubisoft can pull off a markedly better sequel in Watch Dogs 2, just like they did with Assassin’s Creed and its sequel....
The newly-released Doom is a fast-paced, old-school gorefest, and a godsend to fans of the classic series that wanted something more action-based than the horror-inspired Doom 3 of 2004. But the success of the game raises an important question for fans of other long-dormant series: if Doom can make a comeback after over a decade of silence, why can’t their favorites do the same? Whether a game series has simply entered into a deep state of silence or continuing entries have strayed too far from the series’ roots, sometimes a simple, polished, back-to-basics approach is required, and the new Doom game has provided an amazing template to be followed....
