Director Christopher McQuarrie confirms that Alec Baldwin will be returning in Mission: Impossible 6 with a new photo from the film’s set. After Brad Bird reinvigorated the Mission franchise in 2011 with the critically-acclaimed Ghost Protocol, McQuarrie managed to continue the franchise’s success streak with 2015’s Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation. And for the first time in the film franchise’s history, the upcoming sixth Mission: Impossible film will feature McQuarrie reprising his role as the film’s writer and director, as he takes the franchise into a supposedly darker and more emotional territory than the previous two installments have.

No official plot details have been revealed from Mission: Impossible 6 as of yet, other than that it picks up shortly after the events of Rogue Nation. However, McQuarrie has been slowly confirming and announcing several new and returning cast members in the film over the past several weeks, with a consistent stream of behind-the-scenes images from the film’s production. And it looks like the film will feature the return of another Rogue Nation character, though, one that was perhaps less expected than Rebecca Ferguson’s Ilsa Faust.

With principal photography on Mission: Impossible 6 still underway, McQuarrie has officially confirmed that Alec Baldwin will be starring in the film. The actor will be reprising his role as new IMF Director, Alan Hunley, following his introduction as the character in Rogue Nation. And like with all of the film’s other casting announcements, McQuarrie revealed Baldwin’s return with a new behind-the-scenes photo from the film, via his official Instagram account:

There’s no word yet on how large of a role Baldwin will play in the film, after garnering just a small supporting role in Rogue Nation. However, following his promotion to being the director of the IMF, it’s more likely than not that Baldwin will have a behind-the-scenes presence in the film, as he assigns Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) and his crew to various missions, and intermittently monitors their progress throughout the film. Considering that most of Baldwin’s screen time in Rogue Nation was shared with Jeremy Renner’s Brandt - who won’t be returning in Mission: Impossible 6 - it’s entirely possible he could step in to try and fill some of Brandt’s shoes, this time around.

Baldwin won’t be the only unexpected familiar face set to be making an appearance in Mission: Impossible 6, with Michelle Monaghan, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Sean Harris, and more all set to return for their respective roles in the film. In addition, the movie will also feature several exciting new members in its ensemble, including Henry Cavill’s mustachioed new spy, Angela Bassett’s CIA Director, and Vanessa Kirby’s currently unknown female character. That’s an impressive ensemble - even for this franchise - that McQuarrie has assembled for Mission: Impossible 6, which is just shaping up to be one of next year’s more exciting and unpredictable blockbuster titles.
