The promo for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’s season 5 finale promises someone will die. After five years on the air, the future is unclear for ABC’s now lone Marvel series. It may have had a rocky start, but S.H.I.E.L.D. continues to reinvent itself on a seasonal basis. For their somewhat surprising fifth season return, showrunners Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen sent the team to space, and the future. The time-traveling adventure has since brought them back to Earth, but with a ticking clock on the destruction of their planet.

All but one episode has now aired for S.H.I.E.L.D.’s fifth season, and the crew has been given an absolute no-win scenario. By harnessing the last bit of the Centipede serum, they can do one of two things. They can save their leader Coulson by combining the serum with the powers of Daisy’s mother, or use the serum to inject Graviton with Odium and kill him. They can’t do both, and whatever choice they make will cost them a life.

TV Promos shared the trailer for the season 5 finale of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., fittingly titled “The End.” In what could be the series finale as well, the trailer is somber, with a Coulson voice over. While it provides some intriguing hints at what the finale will include, it also promises that somebody will die by the time the episode comes to a close.

The promo is edited to make you think they’re obviously talking about one of the main team members, but that may not be the case. As mentioned earlier, the penultimate episode of the season ends with the team learning of their unfortunate circumstance. Even if the team decides they must kill Talbot over everything else, doing so will also result in the death of Coulson. But, if they decide to save Coulson’s life, then they will put the entire world’s population at risk and probably lose a few members as they tried any other way to stop Talbot.

If the team is going to save the day (possibly one last time), they can’t do it without someone dying. Coulson is the obvious candidate as they’ve been building up the possibility all season long, and in this promo he’s either in a bed or on the ground unconscious. But, he is speaking in the promo too, so he must awake at some point. The question then becomes, is it because he’s cured or is it to say his goodbyes? Previous marketing materials teased May could be a casualty, but she was around in the future. However, if the team is able to break the time loop, then all of those flashbacks mean nothing. While fans wait to see if the show will be renewed or not, the one thing we do know now is that we’ll be saying goodbye in some fashion either way.
