WARNING: Spoilers for last week’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

-

The most recent episode of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. was packed full of shocking moments, but the big Yo-Yo twist is actually a nod to her comic book origin. The current fifth season may be the last for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., but it’s making sure to go out on a bang. Time travel and a post-apocalyptic future in space have already occupied the first part of the season, and the series is bringing back a number of elements from its past.

‘All the Comforts of Home’ brought the agents (and Deke) back to Earth where they’re now hunted by General Hale as public enemy number one. But the big surprise came when Dove Cameron’s Ruby turned out to be a costumed supervillain under orders from her mother. And while that was a twist few some coming, Ruby taking Yo-Yo’s arms was even more unexpected.

Though the future/space version of Yo-Yo lacked her arms, it seemed unclear if that would happen to ‘our’ Elena. After all, it’s not entirely clear how time travel on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. works. Plus, we’ve seen a future version of Yo-Yo gearing up for battle with a Kree axe in her hands. But for fans of the comics, all of these scenes may be connected.

Yo-Yo Rodriguez was introduced in 2008’s Mighty Avengers #13 by Brian Michael Bendis. She then rose to prominence as Slingshot, a member of Nick Fury’s Secret Warriors. The team was founded after the Skrull Secret Invasion and Secret Warriors by Bendis and Jonathan Hickman followed the adventures of Fury’s new black ops team as they uncovered a new sect of Hydra. Joining Slingshot on the team were leader Daisy Johnson, the son of Absorbing Man (who returned this week), J.T. James (aka Hellfire), Manifold, and Phobos.

Aside from using the name for a team of Inhumans Daisy led, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has paid homage by introducing Hellfire as an Inhuman, bringing the actual Absorbing Man to the side of good, name-checking Eden ‘Manifold’ Fesi, and introducing the Hydra-inspired villain Hive (who will also return this week). And of course, adding Yo-Yo to the show and given her a larger role than she’s ever had in the comics.

Though Puerto Rican instead of Columbian and a good bit younger, Slingshot in the comics has a similar ‘snap-back’ brand of super-speed as the Yo-Yo of the show. But one of her biggest traits is that she loses her arms in a battle with the Gorgon. She’s out of commission for a while but eventually gets some prosthetic arms and heads back into the field. Fans have long wondered if the show would mirror this, and it looked as if the future Yo-Yo would be the only nod.

Now, it seems safe to assume Elena will get Fitz to cook her up some cybernetic limbs (and perhaps she’ll decide to shave her head). The version of Yo-Yo we see with the axe, then, could be one who has new arms. Either that, or the time loops of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. work in a different way. Regardless, Yo-Yo losing her arms is one of the last major aspects of Secret Warriors to make it into the MCU. Unless Manifold is about to make his debut before the end of this season of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
