Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. actress Elizabeth Henstridge, who plays Jemma Simmons in the series, has shared her thoughts on the ongoing fan campaign for the ABC program to finally crossover with the bigger Marvel Cinematic Universe. Since its inception in 2013 sprung from Agent Phil Coulson’s supposed death in the first Avengers film, the small screen show has operated separately from the rest of the MCU - despite the fact that they were supposed to be co-existing in the same shared universe.
Fans have been pushing for a potential crossover between the two Marvel properties for quite a while now. But it seems that it is just not in the cards, at least in the foreseeable future, as both franchises expand within their own boundaries. The TV series, however, continues to reference events in the MCU most recently brought about by the situation in Captain America: Civil War. The MCU, on the other hand, barely acknowledges the existence of the organization, even with Coulson being one of its key members.
During her recent appearance at the Wizard World Columbus, Screen Geek was able to catch up with Henridge where the actress on the status of crossover between Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and any MCU project in the future:
Further, the actress has also said that she believes some of the Avengers know something about Coulson surviving Loki’s attack in Avengers although she admits that the situation complicates things for both franchises:
“I don’t know. It’s such a boring answer, but time scale wise – they shoot those movies and then they’re out in 2-3 years and we shoot stuff that’s out in a couple of weeks. Would we keep [everything the same] for 3 years? You have to think about logistics. So, I don’t know but logistically, it’s tricky.”
MCU mastermind Kevin Feige has recently just reiterated that the are currently no plans of working with Marvel TV as of yet. That said, the Marvel Studios President is not closing the doors that the much-awaited collision of worlds which would make for a massive spectacle. It will also tie existing narrative loose ends regarding Coulson and his ties to pretty much every Avenger introduced in the MCU’s Phase I. It’s easy to forget how pivotal his character was in bringing together Earth’s Mightiest Heroes even before Nick Fury appeared in Tony Stark’s mansion in the post-credit scene for the first Iron Man.
“It gets quite complicated. I don’t think so, but I have a feeling that some of them might know. Fury obviously knows."
With the MCU minding their own business with Avengers: Infinity War which will be the storied franchise’s 10th-year anniversary offering, the Marvel TV is also branching out to new properties outside Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.. A brand new ABC series, Inhumans are gearing up for its release next month while the Marvel/Netflix partnership continues to thrive with its first ever ensemble project, The Defenders.
