Dove Cameron’s character on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. will help the show explore the team’s newest villain, but could she be just as dangerous as her mother? Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is heading towards a big milestone when it returns from hiatus, as its 100th episode will soon air. A number of major changes will occur in the episode, which will also see the return of Lash and Hive. And amidst all of that, the agents still have to figure out how to keep the world from being destroyed.
Along with the future-focused mission, the midseason premiere trailer for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. showed that when the heroes return home they’ll be dealing with some Earth-based issues. General Hale, who kidnapped Fitz and executed her own agents when he escaped, will be on their trail. And with the heroes once again on the run for the government, the stakes will be higher than ever. Meanwhile, Dove Cameron will debut as Hale’s daughter Ruby, complicating things further.
EW spoke with the showrunners of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. along with Cameron about what Ruby’s arrival on the show will mean. And given who her mother is, it sounds as if she won’t be a well-adjusted person, according to the actor.
Co-showrunner and executive producer Jed Whedon agreed with Cameron, but noted that the story won’t be all about Ruby. Through her, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. will further examine the team’s newest villain.
“It’s very much affected Ruby. Ruby idolizes her mother in a lot of ways, there’s definitely a lot of love there, but what would happen to the daughter of such a villainous character? It’s not something that’s just going to weigh lightly on her, so we’ll see how that unfolds as the season goes on.”
The big question, of course, is what being raised by someone like General Hale is like. And though Ruby will share some things in common with Daisy back when she was Skye, there’s no guarantee she’ll be on the side of the protagonists.
“We’ll explore a little bit about why [Hale] is the way she is and what motivates her, but also what having a mom like that does to a person. We’re really excited about that relationship.”
Cameron is about to have a much larger role with Marvel. On top of the part in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Cameron will be voicing Gwen Stacy as Ghost-Spider in the upcoming Marvel animated Secret Warriors film. Though we had once hoped that character would crossover with the actor to the MCU, it seems Cameron will be tackling two distinct characters. Still, fans of the musician and Disney Channel star will likely be excited for both projects.
“I think that everybody is the hero of their own story. But Ruby definitely, you sense it in the first episode, she’s got a bit of an edge to her. I can’t really embellish on why it’s different than anything I’ve done, but it definitely is. I can back up their consensus — it’s very, very different than anything I’ve ever done.”
