Warning: This post contains SPOILERS for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’s season 5 finale

-

Clark Gregg is set to meet with the showrunners of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. to discuss a return for season 6. ABC picked up the pieces left by The Avengers in 2012 to resurrect Phil Coulson. Since then, Coulson took over as Director of S.H.I.E.L.D., helped build the agency back up after Hydra’s takeover, and continued to dodge all those in pursuit along the way. The fifth season took him to space and gave him a death sentence thanks to that journey, one that the finale looked to complete.

In the closing moments of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’s season 5 finale, Coulson was left on Tahiti to live out his final days in paradise. Melinda May (Ming-Na Wen) joined him for some alone time, but it looked to be a send off for the fan-favorite character. However, that was before Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. was renewed for season 6, and it sounds like audiences may not have seen the last of Coulson after all.

THR spoke to Clark Gregg about all the events of the season finale and how far Coulson has come. But, the big question on everyone’s mind is whether or not he’ll be back for the sixth season. Gregg went on to reveal that he is going to meet with the producers to discuss his future because they have some ideas on how to use him again. Under what circumstances, though, Gregg doesn’t know.

Tancharoen previously stated that they made the S.H.I.E.L.D. season finale to work as a series finale given their uncertain status. This is likely why they gave Coulson something that would resemble closure to his arc. But, he is at the heart of the series, so it isn’t too surprising to learn that they are considering bringing him back. Gregg notes that it could just be in flashbacks or dream sequences, but S.H.I.E.L.D. also dabbled with time travel and alternate futures, so there’s plenty of possible ways for Gregg to return in some capacity.

“I have a meeting with [executive producers] Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen and the showrunners and I know there is some interest in having me involved in this 13-episode season six. I don’t know in what form that will take, whether that will be flashbacks or hopefully some sexy dreams that Melinda May is having. [Laughs.] That would be nice. But that’s all I know so far. There is some desire that is going to be explained to me but it’s why this finale is so deep and emotional.

“I knew by then that this was really a farewell to that character and his life. It was also before we knew anything about whether or not we were picked up so the scene where he is saying goodbye to people was a scene that we couldn’t even rehearse or read aloud successfully. We just had to figure out where we were going to stand and start shooting it because it was just so emotional for me and everybody there.”

If he does return, Gregg isn’t sure whether or not it would be as a series regular again or just in a recurring or supporting role. With the sixth season not coming until summer 2019 (and after Avengers 4), there will be plenty of time for them to figure out how to bring Coulson back in a way that feels as organic as possible. If they can’t figure it out, or should Gregg decide he isn’t interested in returning (which would be surprising), then the finale still gave them plenty of seeds to follow in a sixth season.
