The long summer movie season has come to an end. While we might not get a spectacle movie every weekend at the theaters, it does mean that it’s time for superhero television to come back to the airwaves. Many other superhero shows’ new seasons aren’t scheduled to return until October, however Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has been steadily revving audiences up for their September return for months.
The fourth season will begin with two huge plot lines that appear to be the driving force of the series early on. Following the events of Captain America: Civil War and last season, Agent Coulson (Clark Gregg) has stepped down as the director of the organization and is operating strictly as a field agent. The effects of the Sokovia Accords impact the show in a big way as Coulson is tasked with hunting down these metahumans and ultimately his former protege Daisy (Chloe Bennett), who has gone rogue.
However, by far the biggest draw for the new season has been the introduction of Ghost Rider to the Marvel cinematic universe. The showrunners shocked their fan base when they revealed that Robbie Reyes, played by Gabriel Luna, would be debuting on this month’s season premiere. Since then we have gotten still photos, video clips, and teases revealing increasingly more about the new incarnation of Ghost Rider. Now, a new promo [above] was released that gives even more insight into the new character.
The new promo clip gives audiences their first look into the mind of the new Ghost Rider, while also giving a detailed view of the haunted Dodge Charger’s craftsmanship. More importantly, we get to hear a brief monologue from Ghost Rider that serves as a mission statement for the character when he utters,“I didn’t ask for this…this curse, but vengeance calls.” While this doesn’t reveal much, it does signal to uninitiated viewers that Ghost Rider won’t necessarily be a force of good, which is certainly true to form for the character.
Robbie Reyes was recently introduced in Marvel Comics in 2014, during the well-received Marvel NOW initiative that has changed the complexion of the comic book world. Reyes is a mechanic from Los Angeles who serves as a caretaker for his disabled younger brother and gets cursed with the spirit of Ghost Rider after an encounter with Mr. Hyde (played by Kyle Maclachlan on the show). While it’s not known how Ghost Rider will be introduced on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., there seems to be an array of ways that Reyes could be tied into the already existing plot.
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. moved to a later time slot this year, in an effort to add a slightly darker and more mature edge to the program. Many claim that the show has been on a steady incline ever since midway through the first season, due to the showrunners’ willingness to tinker with the formula. Hopefully, this latest teaser is an indication that the beginning of the fourth season will be more intense and scarier than anything seen on the program so far. Because if there’s one character that’s designed to drive things into new territory, it’s Ghost Rider.
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 4 will premiere at 10pm on Tuesday, September 20th on ABC.
