Agent Carter executive producers would love to revive the TV series at ABC. The Marvel Cinematic Universe officially began with Jon Favreau’s Iron Man in 2008, but it wasn’t until Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. premiered on ABC in 2013 that Marvel Studios had expanded the groundbreaking shared universe onto the small screen. Two years later, the broadcast network debuted its second comic book TV series, Agent Carter, with Hayley Atwell reprising her cinematic role as the eponymous character.
The Agent Carter TV series took inspiration from the 2011 Marvel One-Shot of the same name and followed Peggy Carter’s adventures with the Strategic Scientific Reserve (S.S.R.), which ended up becoming S.H.I.E.L.D.’s research division decades later. Although the series couldn’t keep up with Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’s ratings or the acclaim that Marvel’s Netflix shows, such as Daredevil and Jessica Jones, were receiving, it still had an ardent fan base that wanted to see Peggy Carter’s missions continue with Edwin Jarvis (James D’Arcy). Unfortunately, ABC ended up canceling the show in 2016 after only two seasons, yet people’s hope that the series would one day be revived has never waned, and that includes the show’s producers.
Agent Carter executive producers Tara Butters and Michele Fazekas have been promoting their new ABC comedy series Kevin (Probably) Saves The World, and during their summer TCA press tour, Fazekas told IGN that they wouldn’t think twice about returning to Agent Carter if they were given the chance to revive the series.
When ABC first announced plans to develop an Agent Carter TV series, the only other live-action Marvel show on the air was Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., yet by the time the series premiered in 2015, Marvel TV had more than half-a-dozen other projects in the pipeline. Plus, there was the fact that ABC wanted to pursue the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. spinoff Most Wanted (which ended up being passed over), and that made Agent Carter an unfortunate casualty.
“Yes, we would do Agent Carter tomorrow, at the same time as this show. I love that show.”
Interestingly, Marvel TV head honcho Jeph Loeb recently said that he wanted to keep Agent Carter on the air, but unlike Marvel Entertainment’s movie division, they are “beholden” to the networks that they work with, meaning ABC had full control over the situation. The Disney-owned network may not have been the right outlet for Agent Carter, but that doesn’t mean the series can’t be revived elsewhere, and if that were to happen, it sounds like Marvel TV and the series’ executive producers would be fully behind the project.
