The television side of the Marvel Cinematic Universe has grown exponentially in the past two years to include Agent Carter in addition to Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. on ABC, as well as the Defenders world on Netflix, that currently includes Daredevil and Jessica Jones. Plus, with Luke Cage and Iron Fist arriving on the streaming service in the coming years, and ABC developing a S.H.I.E.L.D. spinoff, Marvel’s Most Wanted, as well as two comedies and another drama series, Marvel TV’s shared universe continues to grow.
About to wrap up its second season, Agent Carter transported the show to 1940s Los Angeles for Peggy Carter’s (Hayley Atwell) sophomore outing. Season 2 saw the return of many fan-favorite characters like Howard Stark (Dominic Cooper) and Edwin Jarvis (James D’Arcy) for another adventure - this time taking on genius physicist/Hollywood starlet Whitney Frost (Wynn Everett). Now, Atwell discusses tonight’s season finale and the potential for more stories following Peggy Carter.
In an interview with IGN, Atwell spoke about a number of relationships and characters that continued to evolve in season 2, such as Peggy’s tenuous partnership with SSR Chief Jack Thompson (Chad Michael Murray), who Atwell believe Peggy puts up with because he isn’t as self-assured as the show’s heroine. Additionally, Atwell discussed at length the argument between Peggy and Jarvis from ‘A Little Song and Dance’, delving into each character’s motivations within the scene and how it helped to evolve their friendship.
Atwell was noticeably more reticent about the finale, ‘Hollywood Ending’, but she did have this to say about the episode:
“I can tell you the ending is a very satisfying round up of events that wrap up quite nicely for the audience, but also leave us on a bit of a cliffhanger. We think that there could be more to come.”
The question of Agent Carter season 3 came up as well since Atwell’s casting in ABC’s pilot Conviction, coupled with struggling ratings, has thrown the show’s future into question. However, Atwell said ABC assured her she would be able to do both Conviction and Agent Carter if the former is picked up to series and the latter is renewed.
Additionally, she said we won’t hear about Agent Carter season 3 until the network’s May upfronts. She also spoke about continuing with Peggy and the world of Agent Carter in more broad terms:
“I think there’s so much more to explore. The finale suggests a couple of cliffhangers that would make us go, “Oh, what does that mean?” The finale doesn’t suggest that that’s it and they live happily ever after; that’s the end. We know that’s not the case. They’ve done it in a very clever way which wraps up and that gives the audience a very satisfying conclusion but they’re not quite finishing it and leaving it there.”
Atwell also mentions that because Peggy is a character who has appeared many times throughout the MCU, the future possibilities of telling more stories about the SSR agent aren’t confined to Agent Carter. Peggy’s story has spanned multiple television series, including Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., and movies, having appeared in Ant-Man and Captain America: The Winter Soldier.
Of course, fans of Agent Carter would likely prefer Peggy’s story to continue being told within this format, rather than be spread out through brief scenes in a variety of movies and other television series. Still, even if Agent Carter is cancelled, it’s unlikely the show’s season 2 finale will be the last we see of Peggy Carter - especially if ‘Hollywood Ending’ doesn’t answer one of the long-running unanswered questions in the MCU: the identity of Peggy’s husband.
