Agent Carter is dead. Despite praise from critics and adoration from fans, the spunky kid sister of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is one of a number of shows to get the axe in recent weeks. Naturally, its fans are not happy about this.
To borrow a line from Game of Thrones, though, “What is dead may never die.” At least, that’s the case in the current TV climate, where once a show is canceled by a network there is still a very strong possibility it might be picked up by a sister network or a streaming video service. Some Agent Carter fans are hoping that just such a resurrection is possible for their favorite old-timey secret agent.
CBR brings word of a fan petition on change.org to bring the series to Netflix, a move that could make sense given that the streaming service is already home to a number of other Marvel series. Netflix subscribers can already find Daredevil and Jessica Jones there, with Luke Cage, Iron Fist, The Defenders, and The Punisher to follow. On top of those original series, it also carries reruns of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and could presumably carry reruns of Agent Carter’s first two seasons in the future. With all that being the case, it would be a good fit for future episodes of Agent Carter as well.
There are a few obstacles for the fan petition, however. First, with so many fan petitions on the Internet these days, they have a decreasingly likely chance of being taken seriously. The Agent Carter petition has under 30,000 signatures at the time of this article, and that’s not a lot compared to the millions of viewers who would be needed to make the show’s revival a worthwhile endeavor. Second, while Netflix’s wealth of Marvel content would seem to make it a suitable home for the show, it could also work against it. After all, there’s such a thing as over-saturation and executives at Netflix could be wary of diminishing returns. Their current original series also have a very specific tone to them, and Agent Carter doesn’t quite fit that tone.
That said, if Agent Carter’s fans are loud enough, there is still a chance for them to make their voices heard. The show was a unique offering among the Marvel universe, loosely tying into the overall narrative (including some prominent appearances from its title character in the Captain America movies from which she originated) but with a noir vibe not found elsewhere. The unfortunately small number of people who found their way to it are passionate about it, and sometimes that’s enough.
