Marvel Studios announces Teyonah Parris will be adult Monica Rambeau in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and debut in WandaVision. Marvel Studios is always setting up future stories and characters, and that is exactly what they did with Monica Rambeau. She was featured in a small role as a child in Captain Marvel earlier this year, while her mother, Maria Rambeau (Lashana Lynch), received the larger part.

However, fans of Marvel Comics know that Monica had the potential for a bright future in the MCU if Marvel Studios decided to explore it. In the comics, she is the best friend to Carol Danvers (Brie Larson) and receives superpowers of her own. She is even Captain Marvel for a time, but is better known as either Photon or Spectrum. While she was just a kid in Captain Marvel, it taking place in 1995 and the main MCU timeline now set in 2023 gives them a quick path to bring Monica back as an adult.

During Marvel Studios’ San Diego Comic-Con panel, they confirmed that this is their plan and that she’ll appear in WandaVision on Disney+. The announcement of Monica returning to the MCU came with casting news too, as Teyonah Parris (If Beale Street Could Talk) was confirmed to be playing her in the series and the shared universe moving forward.

While the casting of a character may be somewhat overshadowed by everything else Marvel Studios announced in the panel, that should not be the case when it comes to finding the adult Monica Rambeau. Parris is a star on the rise after feature roles in Dear White People and Chi-Raq, as well as television appearances in Mad Men and Empire. One of her next projects is the Jordan Peele-produced reboot of Candyman, where she plays one of the lead characters.

She may not be the lead of WandaVision, but her debut in the series further positions her to take on a larger role in the MCU afterward. The events of the series are confirmed to take place after Avengers: Endgame, so Parris’ debut here could lead the way for her to return in Captain Marvel 2 down the road. What is not yet known is if Monica will have her powers in WandaVision or if that is something that will come after the fact - or possibly even during. With WandaVision not debuting on Disney+ until 2021, there is plenty of time for more details to be revealed. For now, it’s just good to know that Monica is coming back and already cast.
