While no official announcement has been made, it seems that ABC has (quietly) decided to cancel Inhumans after one season. The series’ first year on air was a tumultuous one, to say the least. Following the ill-fated decision to premiere the show’s first episodes on IMAX screens, the series was blasted with negative reviews. In the months since, Inhumans has been unable to shake the poor publicity it debuted with. Garnering some of the worst reviews the Marvel Cinematic Universe has ever seen, along with rapidly declining viewership ratings, many began to question whether the show would even be granted a chance to redeem itself with a season 2.
Rumors of the series’ cancellation have been floating around for months, but they’ve gotten particularly intense ever since Disney reacquired the screen rights to the X-Men from Fox last month. The Inhumans were widely viewed as the MCU’s replacement for Wolverine, Jean Grey, and the rest of Marvel’s mutant heroes. With the X-Men finally back home and MCU-accessible (in a few years, anyway), Black Bolt, Medusa, and the rest of the Inhumans appeared to be living on borrowed time. And if a recent report is to be believed, that time may have finally run out.
As first reported by SpoilerTV, it looks like ABC has removed the Inhumans from its official press site. The show doesn’t appear in any of the website’s dropdown menus, it doesn’t register in its search bar, and attempts to manually type in its URL don’t work either. It’s not exactly an official confirmation that the series is dead in the water, but things certainly aren’t looking pretty.
In fairness, the show’s page does still exist on ABC’s official website, but Inhumans doesn’t appear on that homepage’s “shows” dropdown menu, another sign that it’s not long for this world. When you pair this recent development with ABC president Channing Dungey’s recent comments ("…the numbers, unfortunately, were less exciting for us than we hoped they would be"), it’s definitely looking like we’ve seen the last of this lame duck series.
If this is indeed the end for Inhumans, it won’t exactly be a shocking development. We may have to wait a few more months before the series’ cancellation is made official, but if you’re dying for a season two, we’d suggest getting that fan campaign going as soon as possible.
