Netflix currently has no plans for continuing its Gilmore Girls revival. Fans may never get to return to Stars Hollow for another round, and they may never find out what happens after Rory’s big reveal at the end of Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life.
Gilmore Girls originally ran on the WB, with is final season on The CW, from 2000 to 2007. The show focused on the life of a mother and daughter, Lorelai and Rory Gilmore, who lived in the quirky little town of Stars Hollow. The show’s fast and witty banter, along with its many pop culture references, quickly made it a hit. Throughout its seven seasons, it explored the concepts of family, relationships, love, community, ambition and life. Netflix revived the show in 2016 as a four-episode miniseries titled Gilmore Girls: A Year In the Life.
According to TV Line, Netflix Vice President of original content Cindy Holland, speaking at the Television Critics Assoc. summer press tour, has confirmed that the streaming subscription provider is not currently in talks to offer fans a follow-up to Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life. But she did reiterate that Netflix remains a big fan of the show:
“We haven’t discussed it at all. But [series creator Amy Sherman-Palladino] knows that we are very big fans of Gilmore Girls.”
Gilmore Girls star Lauren Graham, though, seems hesitant to continue with the show. She has stated she felt like A Year in the Life finally offered fans a satisfying conclusion and that continuing the series could end up disappointing everyone involved. She did not rule out returning to the series, but still felt like the Netflix miniseries offered a gratifying end.
For most fans, A Year in the Life did offer some closure. But many fans want to know what happened after Rory revealed that she was pregnant in the final minutes of that miniseries. That revelation left Gilmore Girls with a major cliffhanger that many fans would like to see resolved. At the time, though, it doesn’t look like that will happen. But never say never: Maybe the future still holds at least one more visit to Stars Hollow.
