90 Day Fiancé: The Other Way star Paul Staehle ran away for a second time while in Brazil. He’s known for his dramatic exits in the past and this season fans watched as Paul ran away from cameras (again) after getting some unexpected news.

Paul first appeared on Seasons 1 and 2 of TLC’s 90 Day Fiancé: Before the 90 Days, a series that follows couples attempting to complete the 90-day K-1 visa process so they can be together in the United States. Viewers saw him and his wife, Karine, who were married in November 2017, meet for the first time on camera in Brazil, and then followed them through all of their pre-wedding drama. One particularly heartbreaking low was when Karine suffered a miscarriage on the show. When Karine found out she was pregnant again and was unable to come to the States because Paul couldn’t afford the K-1 visa process and because his mom refused to sponsor him, he decided to move to Brazil instead. The last time Paul ran away was the iconic moment when he revealed to Karine that he’d spent some time in jail for arson. However, before she had time to react, he ran away into the forest and threatened to throw himself into the dirty water, saying it was because Karine didn’t deserve “damaged goods.”

On the latest episode of 90 Day Fiancé: The Other Way, Paul received a letter and was shocked when he got the news that his application for citizenship was denied. What’s more, Paul was specifically rejected due to “crime of terrorism, genocide, crime against humanity, and war crimes.” When asked why that would be the reason by producers, he said, “It’s beyond f*cking me.” Then, when he read that he’d be detained if he didn’t leave Brazil within ten days, he ran away from the cameras, saying, “Karine’s going to be heartbroken.”

Paul’s abrupt exit led many fans to believe his legal issues might be much bigger than anyone realized. He revealed to Karine that his lengthy record includes arson - specifically “burning personal property to defraud insurer" - and that his ex-girlfriend previously took out a restraining order on him, saying the relationship “ended so badly, it ended up getting me in some serious trouble." It’s unclear if any or all of these charges have anything to do with the fact that Paul’s Brazil citizenship application was denied.

Apparently, since Paul was denied the citizenship of Brazil, fans found out that he and Karine, who have since given birth to their baby boy, are now back in the US. Now, however, his situation is up in the air, and only time will tell whether or not he can iron out his legal troubles and return to his family. In the meantime, fans of the show will just have to keep watching this season to see how everything plays out.
