Warning! SPOILERS ahead for 3Below: Tales of Arcadia season 2.
There won’t be a 3Below season 3, but that doesn’t mean that Guillermo del Toro and DreamWorks Animation’s Tales of Arcadia are over. 3Below is the follow-up series to Trollhunters, switching focus from the trolls living below Arcadia to the aliens who’ve landed on Earth.
3Below season 1 saw the newly arrived Akiridian royals, Aja and Krel adjusting to their lives in Arcadia, making friends and learning the ropes of high school while also defending their new home from interstellar threats. In season 2, the King- and Queen-in-waiting continue learning about Earth while working to revive their parents, eventually needing to fight off a world-ending attack from General Morando. 3Below season 2 manages to bring the series full circle, essentially ending the story.
If you’re hungry for more from the Tales of Arcadia series, here’s what you can expect in lieu of 3Below season 3.
There Won’t Be A 3Below: Tales Of Arcadia Season 3
While Trollhunters is three seasons, it appears that 3Below will only be two seasons; season 2’s ending wraps up all of the show’s major plots. Morando is defeated and both Earth and Akridian-5 are saved. Aja and Krel are reunited with their parents, though only briefly, because their parents must sacrifice themselves to stop Morando. Aja and Krel are therefor the new Queen and King of Akiridian-5, respectively, but Krel chooses to remain on Earth, while Aja returns home. The existence of aliens - and the truth of these aliens, specifically - is also finally revealed to the citizens of Arcadia.
3Below season 2 brings closure to Aja and Krel’s quest to save their home and is the end of this particular tale. However, while there won’t be a 3Below season 3, the ending sets up the next chapter in Tales of Arcadia and it’s very likely that Krel and possibly Aja will return in some capacity for this next series.
Wizards Is The Next Arcadia Netflix Show, Not 3Below Season 3
Tales of Arcadia is an anthology series made up of three different animated programs. Trollhunters is the first series in the anthology and 3Below is the second. Tales of Arcadia will then conclude with its final series, Wizards. It’s isn’t known yet how many seasons Wizards will have, but as the final chapter in Tales of Arcadia, it wouldn’t be all that surprising if Wizards wraps up the anthology series in just one season.
While specific details about Wizards remain unknown, Del Toro has teased (via Twitter) that Wizards will tie together the different mythologies of each show. He’s also said that many if not all the Tales of Arcadia characters introduced on the previous shows will appear. This may include Jim, Claire, Toby, Blinky, and AAARRRGGHH!!! from Trollhunters as well as Aja, Krel, and Varvatos Vex from 3Below. Presently, the only characters confirmed to appear in Wizards are Steve Palchuk and Eli Pepperjack - making them the only characters to have appeared across all three series - and Merlin, who is as of now the only known wizard.
How 3Below’s Story Can Continue On Wizards
3Below season 2 neatly finishes the story of Aja and Krel’s mission to revive their parents and free Akiridian-5 from Morando’s control. In the end, Aja returns to Akiridian-5 to rule as its new Queen (or as whatever new title she thinks up for herself), while Krel remains on Earth to continue experiencing life among humans. In which case, Wizards may see the two Tarron siblings adjusting to their new lives apart from each other. With Krel still on Earth, he’s sure to quickly become involved in thwarting whatever threat is looming, and once he does, it’d stand to reason he’d soon contact his sister and the rest of the Akiridians (at the very least Varvatos and Zadra) for help.
As for what role the Akirdians will have in Wizards, it may relate to a scene in 3Below season 2 that reveals the Akiridians and trolls first meeting hundreds of years ago. This suggests that their cultures may be more intertwined than we initially thought and, as the culminating series, Wizards: Tales of Arcadia may reveal more about that connection as well as the origins of Arcadia.
