Following on the heels of the 2016 Academy Awards ceremony, awards season is winding to a close but there are still some awards shows lurking this year - not least, the MTV Movie Awards. Traditionally more free and laid-back than some of the more prestigious ceremonies, the MTV Movie Awards seek to recognize a wide genre of films and are usually more inclined to award popular mainstream movies; in particular, the comic-book and/or sci-fi genres.
Hosted this year by Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart - who will share the screen later the year in the buddy action/comedy Central Intelligence - the MTV awards are voted for by the general public and the newly-announced nominations reflect the public’s appetite for two films in particular. Star Wars: The Force Awakens only received five Oscar nominations, and didn’t take home any of them, but it might well fare better at the MTV Awards. Receiving a massive eleven MTV award nominations in total, The Force Awakens team will be hoping to triumph in some of the toughest categories - including, Best Movie, Best Female Performance (Daisy Ridley), and Best Villain (Adam Driver). Ridley is also pitted against her co-star, John Boyega in the Breakthrough Performance category. After losing out to Boyega for the BAFTA Rising Star Award, will this be Ridley’s turn?
Meanwhile, R-rated superhero action/comedy Deadpool came too late for most award recognition, but MTV have not left it out of the running in 2016. The film has garnered eight nominations in total, including five for star Ryan Reynolds. Elsewhere, other movies that have pulled many nominations throughout awards season are also included (such as The Revenant, Mad Max: Fury Road, and Steve Jobs), along with 2015’s biggest blockbusters, including Avengers: Age of Ultron and Jurassic World.
