The Hollywood Foreign Press has announced its list of nominations for the 73rd Golden Globes Awards Ceremony, which is going to take place near the beginning of 2016. Both the best in film and television are recognized at the annual Golden Globes ceremony, and the event is often viewed as a precursor to the Academy Awards too. Case in point: in 2015, Golden Globes winners such as Alejandro González Iñárritu (for directing Birdman) and Eddie Redmayne (for his starring role in The Theory of Everything) would go on to win Oscars for the same work shortly thereafter.

Ricky Gervais is returning to host the 2016 Golden Globes ceremony, and the nominees for the event have now been unveiled. Several films ended up landing multiple nominations, including titles ranging from critically-acclaimed indie features (Room, Carol) to near universally well-received big-budget films alike (Mad Max: Fury Road, The Martian). Meanwhile, in the area of television, freshman series like Mr. Robot, Master of None, and Crazy Ex-Girlfriend secured nominations, alongside returning heavyweights Game of Thrones and Orange is the New Black, among others.

There are some noteworthy absences from the roster of Golden Globes contenders in 2016, of course, on both the film and television side. Critical darling Sicario was shut out altogether, while early buzzed-about candidates (such as Johnny Depp for Best Actor in Black Mass) were not recognized by the HFP, either. Similarly, films like Steve Jobs and The Danish Girl, which were regarded as surefire awards-contenders from the beginning, wound up getting less love at the Golden Globes than some might’ve anticipated.

Meanwhile, in terms of television, Marvel TV went unrecognized for either of the critically-acclaimed Netflix series it debuted in 2015 (Daredevil and Jessica Jones), while certain cult TV shows - including HBO’s The Leftovers - failed to land any nominations, too. HBO and Netflix both picked up more than their fair share of nods in total, though, thanks to their own original programming. For more, read the full list of 2016 Golden Globes nominations, below!
