Even though the Marvel universe is almost always recognized and discussed for its amazing action, great storylines, characters, etc., there is something else in the Marvel universe that has garnered the attention of Marvel fans across the world - the relationships.

Some of the most iconic couples in the Marvel universe are Spider-Man/Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson, Vision and Scarlet Witch/Wanda Maximoff, and Tony Stark/Iron Man and Pepper Potts. But, sometimes, Marvel fans wish that certain characters would get together with another love interest in comic books, movies, etc. instead of the partner they already have.

One of the ways the fans of the Marvel universe have expressed their feelings about their dream character pairings has been through the use of fan art. These are fan illustrated drawings that in the case of this list, will showcase two characters from the Marvel universe that are a couple.

To qualify for this list, the fan art must depict a Marvel character with another Marvel character that hasn’t been a couple in the MCU or the X-Men films. For example, Tony Stark/Iron Man and Pepper Potts will not be on this list, as many fans of Marvel have seen Stark and Potts together in various films.

With that being said, here’s 15 Wild Fan Art Of Unexpected Marvel Couples.

Captain America and Scarlet Witch

Millions of fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe films as well as comic books, are well informed about the character of Scarlet Witch being in a relationship with Vision. This has been seen time and time again in the Marvel comic books, as well as the Avengers films, most recently in Avengers: Infinity War.

It seems that the artist behind this fan art, Hlontro, thinks that the Scarlet Witch and the iconic superhero Captain America/Steve Rogers would be a good couple.

This fan art provides some much needed love for the patriotic Captain America, as he does not really have a partner after his days in the war.

During the war, he was dating Peggy Carter, but it only lasted during his time in battle. Having Rogers and Maximoff together seems like it would actually be a pretty good match. Rogers has been shown time and time again to be an extremely humble man, and Maximoff is a woman who would make for a great partner for Rogers.

It also helps matters that they are both superheroes and often fight the same villains. It would also provide the aforementioned missing current love interest for everybody’s favorite Marvel patriotic hero.

Black Widow and Winter Soldier

When fans all around the world rushed to their local movie theatres to watch the 2015 film Avengers: Age of Ultron, they were understandably excited to see what director Joss Whedon was cooking up after the immense success of his 2012 predecessor film The Avengers.

While the film gathered mostly positive and praise-worthy reviews from both film critics and comic book movie fans alike, there was one element that fans seemed to be a little bit confused by - the sudden relationship between Scarlett Johansson’s Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow and Mark Ruffalo’s Bruce Banner/Incredible Hulk. It certainly felt out of left field, as the previous film did not give any hints whatsoever that the relationship was coming.

In fact, in 2012’s The Avengers, one remarkably iconic scene from the film depicts Ruffalo’s Hulk chasing and about to attack Johansson’s Black Widow. Even though at the end of Avengers, they all team up to defeat Loki, it still does not explain the future relationship that would eventually blossom. Age of Ultron’s sudden pairing of the two was extremely bizarre.

It seems likely that Tumblr artist petite-madame felt the same way with the unusual relationship, as she created this fan art showcasing Black Widow and Winter Soldier as a couple. With their shared Russian background, this couple has a lot more in common that Bruce and Natasha.

Spider-Man and Deadpool

The characters of Peter Parker/Spider-Man and Wade Wilson/Deadpool are on the surface, two completely different characters in more ways than just one. For example, Spider-Man is a man whose number one goal above all is to help save the day from whatever threat may be facing the world. On the other hand, Deadpool is a man who is often seen as the threat that will harm the world. He is an anti-hero, meaning he does not necessarily cement himself on neither the superhero side or the supervillain side.

Additionally, Wade Wilson has been shown time and time again that he goes about taking his enemies out in a pretty vicious manner, often at times ending them, something that Spider-Man / Peter Parker would seriously restrain from doing unless absolutely necessary.

The two Marvel characters do actually have a fairly strong shared characteristic - their sense of humor.

Both Parker and Wilson are extremely well known to comic book fans for their extremely witty sense of humor that they frequently use while in battle with their foes. It seems like these two characters may not be completely different from one another, and it appears that artist Bunny-Boss feels the exact same way about the situation. As does Deadpool - their shared Spider-Man/Deadpool run makes several references to Wade’s feelings for Spider-Man.

Wolverine and Storm

In the X-Men films, the extremely powerful mutant superhero James “Logan” Howlett / the Wolverine is often seen with Jean Grey-Summers. It is more than likely the most iconic relationship in the X-Men cinematic universe, which has its fair share of wonderfully written and explored couples. This relationship has not always been too sturdy, however.

As seen in the extremely divisive 2006 installment of the X-Men film franchise, X-Men: The Last Stand, the love interest of LoganWolverine turned extremely evil and set out to cause mass destruction. Unfortunately for Logan, he is a superhero, which means his job is to protect the world from all threats at all costs, which includes stopping his own love interest, Jean Grey. This results in him having to end his former love in a desperate attempt to prevent her from wreaking pure havoc.

The character of Ororo Monroe/Storm has had some pretty great chemistry with Logan/Wolverine and it would make quite a bit of sense if the two eventually ended up as a couple once things were resolved with Jean Grey.

Fan art artist DKCissner shared this photo that they illustrated, which features the two as a couple.

Falcon and Captain America

When the beloved 2014 Marvel Cinematic Universe film Captain America: The Winter Soldier was released in theatres, fans of the film instantly adored the chemistry on screen with the characters of Steve Rogers/Captain America and then-newcomer to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Sam Wilson/Falcon.

That is why it should come as no surprise that artist brumous created a fan art drawing of the two Marvel superheroes as a couple. In the illustration, we see Captain America sporting a comic book style version of his iconic and patriotic outfit, and the same can be said about Falcous, who is shown to be wearing a white and red colored costume.

As previously mentioned, Captain America is not dating any character currently in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. As most recently made clear in the new 2018 film Avengers: Infinity War, Captain America is now a man who was lost a lot of hope after the events of 2016’s smash hit Captain America: Civil War, which saw his team going up against Tony Stark/Iron Man’s team.

Rogers is a run-down man now who would not care to find true love. However, we are willing to bet that if he was indeed still looking for a partner, Sam Wilson would be on the top of his list.

Loki and Black Widow

Loki is almost always recognized as being the maniacal god who is the brother of Thor Odinson, god of thunder from the mythical realm of Asgard, who has a severe and mostly extreme passion for world destruction. In the 2012 film The Avengers, he served as the main villain, with Thanos’ Chitauri aliens as his lackeys.

Even though Loki does not end up succeeding in his plan to destroy the world and wipe out the Avengers to rule the world, he does later make several attempts to be good for once, such as his heroic sacrifice in 2013’s Thor: The Dark World as well as him teaming up to help his brother Thor and newcomer Valkyrie (played by Tessa Thompson) escape the planet Sakaar ruled by Jeff Goldblum’s Grandmaster.

Black Widow/Natasha Romanoff, on the other hand, has never been seen as a major threat to the world as she has always served her time on the Avengers team as a hero who will do whatever it takes to protect the world with her fellow superhero allies.

DeviantArt user HechiceraRip uploaded their fan art, which highlights Black Widow giving her hand to Black Widow. He accepts it with a kiss.

Iron Man and Captain America

This one may come as a bit of a surprise more than any other entry on this list as both men have been shown on numerous occasions to disagree with each other on an abundance of topics. One of the most notable situations was depicted in the previously mentioned film Captain America: Civil War.

In that film, Steve Roger /Captain America has the extremely strong belief that the Avengers should be able to roam free in the world. Whenever a situation arises where they would need to intervene and save the day like they normally do, they should have the freedom to do so. On the other hand, Tony Stark/Iron Man disagrees completely. He believes that the Avengers should have to undergo monitoring, and that the superhero team should only step in these situations and save the day when absolutely necessary. Their two strong disagreements carry the entire film and is the reason why Civil War exists.

If you really think about it, Iron Man and Captain America have been through a plethora of good and bad things together.

At the end of the day. each and every time, they always have each others backs. Rogers states to Tony at the end of the film “if you need me - I’ll be there.” We Heart It user annelise_faye also agrees that the two actually have a pretty good chance at being a couple as demonstrated in this fan art.

Gamora and Groot

For fans of the now iconic and almost universally loved films, 2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy and its eventual 2017 sequel Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, one of the true standout elements of both films for critics as well as comic book film fans was the relationship between Chris Pratt’s Peter Quill/Star-Lord and Zoe Saldana’s Gamora.

It is a truly charming relationship that blossoms on screen and it is definitely elevated by the wonderfully charismatic performances from both Pratt and Saldana. The two truly feel like a couple in real life, despite the fact that they actually are not. Therefore, most fans of the Guardians of the Galaxy storylines would not expect the character of Gamora to end up in a relationship with her fellow member of the Guardians of the Galaxy, the tree Groot.

It certainly seems a bit strange that Gamora, who is of the Zehoberei species, would be a couple with Groot, who is a tree, despite the fact that they both fight on the same team and for the same reasons.

This fan art by ToriaDoria is really well done and realised however, and shows Groot offering a flower to Gamora in an attempt to show her how he feels about her.

Thor and Captain America

Thor Odinson and Steve Rogers/Captain America are two drastically different characters in many ways, as was the case with the Wade Wilson/Deadpool and Peter Parker/Spider-Man on this list.

Thor is the extraordinarily powerful god of thunder from the realm of Asgard, and Steve Rogers/Captain America is Earth’s iconic superhero who sports the American flag and colors on his costume symbolising “the American way.” In other words, one is from a mystical realm full of powerful gods and mythology, and the other one is a figure of hope and justice that many individuals look up to.

Growing up as a prince with superpowers, Thor has a much more light-hearted nature than Steve, who grew up sickly and poor in Brooklyn. However, it’s a little hard to imagine Thor frolicking like this picture after the loss of Loki, Heimdall, and half of Asgard’s survivors, so maybe they are now better matched.

Even though the two superheroes who both fight on the same team may not be exactly alike, they are good friends and have each others backs in battle as superheroes should.

This charming piece of fan art by Noelle Stevenson showcases both Thor Odinson and Steve Rogers/Captain America both in their classic costumes as a couple, unexpected as may be.

Iron Man and Black Widow

Tony Stark/Iron Man and Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow are well known to both comic book readers as well as to the many fans of the ever expanding Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Iron Man kickstarted the blockbuster franchise back in 2008 with his solo film Iron Man. Two years later, fans of that film were introduced to a sequel, Iron Man 2, that was met with its fair share of criticism. However, even some of the biggest haters of that film agree that one of the greatest things to come out of Iron Man 2 was the introduction to Scarlett Johansson’s portrayal of Natasha Romanoff.

In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Iron Man is currently engaged to his long-time girlfriend, Pepper Potts, who is portrayed by Gwyneth Paltrow. Natasha Romanoff was previously interested in Bruce Banner, who promptly flew off into space However, if both of those relationships do not work out, maybe they should be with one another, and see how the super spy and genius billionaire playboy philanthropist hit it off.

This adorable fan art uploaded by an artist named Alex Garner from 2010 showcases them in full costumes, preparing to battle as a superpowered couple.

Mystique and Wolverine

Mystique is an extremely interesting mutant member of the beloved X-Men universe. She’s an iconic character who has appeared in a plethora of Marvel X-Men comic books as well as feature films. Her first feature film appearance was in the 2000 film that began the X-Men film series that fans of the series love to this day.

The character in the 2000 film was portrayed by Rebecca Romijn, and is played by Jennifer Lawrence most commonly in the most recent X-Men films beginning with 2011’s X-Men: First Class.

Both Mystique and Wolverine have been shown to be extremely capable of being super stealthy and are known to be extremely powerful and dangerous to anybody  who even attempts to get in their way.

In that regard, it does make somewhat of sense that they would actually have a possibility of ending up as a couple sometime in the future. It certainly would not be a couple that many people could predict coming to fruition, however, since the two have not really spent too much time even on screen together in recent films.

DeviantArt artist Timothy-Brown illustrated this fan art picture which features Logan/the Wolverine in his classic costume as well as Mystique in her own comics costume.

Iron Man and Hulk

It is time yet again to mention another green character on this list of unexpected Marvel couples, and this time we are once again talking about the Incredible Hulk. It’s apparent from the Marvel comics that Bruce Banner/the Incredible Hulk and his superhero friend Tony Stark/Iron Man have some pretty amazing chemistry. However, their chemistry has been shown to be even stronger in the gargantuan Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The first time the two superheroes interacted with each other on the big screen was in the critically and fan beloved 2012 colossal film The Avengers.

Tony and Bruce hit it off and were dubbed “the science bros” by fans.

Both Tony Stark/Iron Man and Bruce Banner/the Incredible Hulk have had their arguments and disagreements throughout their years, but after everything they have been through, they are still  extremely good friends.

It actually makes plenty of sense that Tumblr user supergeeksgonewild went and created this fan art, even if it is a bit unexpected. The two have always been shown to have each other’s backs through thick and thin, so their getting together makes sense for the most part. If Pepper and Tony ever broke up, and if Bruce could not get together with Romanoff, maybe they could try being together.

Drax and Mantis

In the 2017 sequel to the extremely acclaimed Guardians of the Galaxy that came before it, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 had some truly exhilarating scenes of pure action and had an emotional story at its core about family and friends. On top of this, however, was the traditional sense of humor that is to be expected whenever the Guardians of the Galaxy are on screen together.

Some of the film’s most hilarious scenes came from the interactions between Dave Bautista’s character, Drax the Destroyer, and Pom Klementieff, who portrayed new character to the series Mantis.

The two often share multiple laughs together in some scenes, which surely made some moviegoers suspect that a possible Drax-Mantis relationship was on its way. However, at one point during the film, Drax even calls his new ally Mantis ugly. This is why it is quite surprising that many fans of the film still think that a Drax and Mantis relationship is a good idea. Yes, the two are great friends, but it still is a bit unexpected.

This fan art, however, is extremely well done by artist Tazaca. It showcases Drax and Mantis sitting together as a couple for the first time.

Hawkeye and Black Widow

It was previously mentioned on this list, but the relationship that was suddenly seen in the 2015 film Avengers: Age of Ultron definitely took many fans and film critics of the Avengers and Marvel series by complete surprise, as there was practically no build up that would have hinted to the fact that Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow would having feelings for her fellow superhero Avenger teammate Bruce Banner/The Incredible Hulk.

What also would not make too much sense would be if Black Widow/Natasha Romanoff got together with another Avenger member Clint Barton/Hawkeye. Yes, the two do have chemistry in the comic books as well as on the big screen films from time to time, but it really is not enough to warrant the two of them falling in love for one another. That does not mean, however, that it would never be a possibility if the two spent more time with each other on missions.

It also appears that the fan art designer of this photo, CrazySerpent, feels like the two have a chance at being a couple some time in the future as well. This sweet drawing showcases Black Widow/Natasha Romanoff handing down a love letter to Clint Barton/Hawkeye.

Winter Soldier and Captain America

This is certainly one that will come as no surprise to the biggest fans of both the Marvel comic storylines as well as the Marvel Cinematic Universe fans. It has been shown numerous times in both forms of media that James Buchanan “Bucky” Barnes/the Winter Soldier and his best friend Steve Rogers/Captain America have been through Hell and back for each other.

After Barnes was thought to have lost his life during a lengthy battle that he fought alongside his best friend Rogers, it was discovered that Barnes had, in fact, survived the second World War. After he was found to be alive by the evil corporation Hydra, the organization took him into their bases and brainwashed him into operating under their beliefs, and erasing all memories that he once had of Rogers.

At the end of the beloved Captain America: The Winter Soldier motion picture, Captain America succeeds in stopping his former best friend and war companion Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier from wreaking havoc on millions of innocent civilians. As a result, this means that Rogers furthermore succeeded in making the Winter Soldier to remember him so they could fight again someday.

They certainly could make a good couple after their many years of recovering to being best friends again and user CA:WS?? believes so.

What surprising couple would you hope to see together in Marvel movies? Let us know in the comments!
