Odds are you’ve heard of Gilmore Girls, as it’s one of the most popular series from the WB and the CW. Even if you haven’t had the chance to watch it, you might know the main girls are obsessed with coffee and everyone on the series has a supernatural ability to talk really fast and their conversation is full of witticisms and pop culture references.
That said, despite how beloved Gilmore Girls is, it isn’t without some major faults. Namely, the final season of the series, season seven, has been considered a major dip in quality over the previous six because the showrunner left. We’re tracking the ten lowest-rated episodes based on IMDb and it’s not a big surprise the majority are from season seven.
Season 6, Episode 10 - He’s Slippin’ ‘Em Bread… Dig?
Most of this episode is actually really happy. Lorelai and Rory are finally reunited and they spend a great bulk of this episode makes up for the lost time. Rory gets to meet Paul Anka and she finds herself at home again in Stars Hollow. Everything finally feels normal again and the Gilmores get to squeal about the impending Lorelai and Luke marriage!
But there is one slight catch. Luke still hasn’t told Lorelai about his secret daughter, April. The April problem was always a major point of contention among fans but it was even stranger that Luke waited so long to tell Lorelai and made an issue out of nothing.
Season 6, Episode 2 - Fight Face
The Lorelai and Rory fight in season six was one of the worst storylines on the show and it was really hard to watch our two favorite characters and mother/daughter duo be at odds with one another. This episode had perhaps one of the worst moments of their entire fight when Rory is left feeling even more ostracized after learning from Luke that he and her mother are engaged to be married!
It’s such a pivotal and important moment in Lorelai’s life and Rory is devastated that her mother didn’t reach out to her to let her know she was getting married. Plus, Rory is forced to start her community service, not something we ever expected to see Rory doing.
Season 7, Episode 3 - Lorelai’s First Cotillion
This episode actually wasn’t all that bad in comparison to some of the awful storylines we got in season seven but given how hated the final season of Gilmore Girls was it makes sense why people didn’t like it. Emily and Richard aren’t all that affected by Lorelai and Luke splitting up and Lorelai has an epiphany about her actions in regards to her parents.
She realizes many of the choices she’d made have been to directly counteract her parent’s desires. Ultimately, Lorelai finally understands that not everything her parents wanted for her was all that bad, to begin with. Elsewhere, Rory and Logan struggle with their long-distance relationship.
Season 7, Episode 2 - That’s What You Get, Folks, for Makin’ Whoopee
Wow, this episode was a mess. Not only for the Gilmore girls but for poor Lane. Lane was given the short end of the stick on Gilmore Girls. She and Zack get married and on the honeymoon, Lane has a horrible time. She gets really sick and thinks sex is terrible.
We find out later she gets pregnant with twins and is forced to give up her rock star dreams! But also in this episode, Rory and Lorelai fight because Rory finds out about Lorelai sleeping with Christopher. And Rory doesn’t get to go on the trip to Asia she and Logan had been planning for a long time.
Season 6, Episode 5 - Always a Godmother, Never a God
If there was anything fans hated more than season seven, it was the lengthy fight between Lorelai and Rory that spanned a good chunk of season six. This episode featured Sookie trying desperately to reunite the Gilmore girls. She tried to make Lorelai and Rory the godmothers of her newest daughter to get them back in the same room.
But when Rory shows up, instead of her and Lorelai bonding again over the newborn, they wind up in a nasty fight. Rory changed her cellphone number and didn’t give it to her own mother but she did give it to Sookie. It quickly became evident a reconciliation wasn’t in the cards in this episode.
Season 7, Episode 9 - Knit, People, Knit!
This episode started the beginning of Luke’s complicated battle with Anna for custody rights over April. It also featured yet another fight between Chris and Lorelai when he feels as if she’s ashamed of him as she had yet to introduce him to the townsfolk. In an effort to include Chris in her daily Stars Hollow life, Lorelai invites him to a knit-a-thon where the townsfolk are knitting to raise money to fix a bridge.
As a way of making a kind gesture, Chris donates all the money the town needs to pay for it. But his gesture proves he doesn’t really understand how Stars Hollow works. The event was also about the fun of it, and it gets wrapped early once they have the money they need.
Season 7, Episode 5 - The Great Stink
Lorelai and Chris are officially a couple, much to the chagrin of millions of viewers. They show up as a couple to Friday Night Dinner which obviously thrills Emily and Richard who always wanted them to be together. But it’s not all perfect.
Sherry comes back into the picture when she sends a letter to Chris apologizing for walking out on him and GG. She wants GG to go to Paris to visit her for a while. Lorelai and Chris get into a fight about this development. Then Rory feels intimidated by Logan’s new business world and his attractive coworkers.
Season 7, Episode 8 - Introducing Lorelai Planetarium
This was a rough episode for fans of Luke and Lorelai and for fans of Rory and Logan. Everyone finds out that Lorelai and Chris eloped while in Paris together and it comes out at Friday Night Dinner. It sucks that once again, Lorelai didn’t fill her parents in on her romantic life. Despite the challenges they’ve faced, it’s disappointing that Emily wasn’t involved in her marriage in some way.
Even though they always wanted Lorelai and Chris to get married, it just doesn’t feel right. Rory is deeply upset with her mother. It sucks that Lorelai eloped without telling her daughter and best friend. Then Rory and Logan get into a big fight over an article she writes and she decides to move out of his apartment.
Season 7, Episode 6 - Go, Bulldogs!
Lorelai and Chris go to parents weekend at Yale. Chris wants to try and make things work with Rory now that he’s back in her life in a full-time capacity. But it’s awkward and embarrassing. Chris invites Rory and all the people on the Yale Daily News to an expensive lunch where everyone gets too drunk.
Rory doesn’t feel comfortable and then cuts it short so she can go catch a breaking news story. It becomes apparent that she isn’t happy about Chris and Lorelai being together despite Chris being her biological dad. Plus, Luke goes on a date with April’s swimming coach and no one wanted to see Luke with anyone but Lorelai.
Season 7, Episode 7 - French Twist
No one was happy about Luke and Lorelai splitting up. To make matters worse, they split up and Lorelai immediately went to Christopher. For the first time, it appeared Chris and Lorelai were going to make their long-awaited romance happen but fans knew that Chris and Lorelai were never going to work out as a couple.
They get married on a whim and they go to Paris together. The entire episode felt stilted and awkward. We all knew they weren’t going to last so it was so strange that season seven though now was the best time to force these two together. If they couldn’t make sparks fly in the most romantic city in the world, it was never going to happen.
