Pixar is one of Disney’s most vital brands and is constantly producing award-winning animation. Their franchises are iconic and plenty of them have spin-off potential. In fact, some of them have already experienced spin-offs of sorts already.
With Disney Plus, there’s a new opportunity to create shows based on these classic films and continue to expand their worlds. While a few Pixar franchises will get that, there’s plenty more that could benefit from spin-offs. Here are 10 of Pixar’s films that should get a Disney Plus series.
CARS
The franchise has perhaps overstayed its welcome but it’s hard to argue against the fact that kids love it. It’s actually had various short films and mini-series that are available on Disney Plus, but there’s plenty more to be done here.
This world that has been developed must have some other interesting characters to explore. Not everyone is a race car, perhaps there are other stories that could be told in this really unique format, that could recapture the magic of the original.
GOOD DINOSAUR
This is a franchise that didn’t quite take off as the others on this list but could be an opportunity to create an educational kids show. Much like Forky can be used to explain many things, these dinosaurs could be used to educate about prehistory.
Not only is this a great opportunity, therefore, but it also gives Pixar an opportunity to carry on animating this lush world of fauna and flora. It’s a shame that this seems like the least likely option on this list, however.
COCO
The land of the dead is a vibrant place full of so many more stories to tell. It’s interesting finding out how this society functions and why some people have ended up there. There’s a lot of opportunities to introduce new characters into this tale.
Furthermore, perhaps there’s an opportunity for a spin-off show that demonstrates a number of other after lifes, based on different cultures. This could be a very spiritual exploration and one with very human stories attached to it.
THE INCREDIBLES
Pixar’s premium superhero family has a lot of great qualities that deserve a sequel. Asides from the fact that one of their main villains keeps getting away, this time period and beautiful aesthetic needs to be seen a lot more.
The sequel film introduced a lot of new characters that could have their own spin-off series, but there’s also the incredible Frozone who we really haven’t seen enough of. There’s plenty to be working with here as the world embraces supers again.
INSIDE OUT
There’s already been a short film about this series but there’s so much more to achieve here. As Riley grows up there are so many new emotions to be dealt with. This is a concept that can also be copied and pasted onto any other character.
There’s so much more to explore and there’s a reason to do so too. This film is helping kids understand their emotions and can even have a positive effect on mental health. It’s important that we continue to use that resource, therefore.
RATATOUILLE
There’s nothing more fun than the end of this film, where a brand new restaurant is set up, created entirely by rats. There’s something really unique that can be done with this character though, that would fit well on Disney Plus.
It would be fun to see a spoof reality TV show, where Remy is like a celebrity chef who has to judge various restaurants. Perhaps this could actually be a competition amongst other rats or animals, or maybe even a rat judging the humans!
ONWARD
The newest Pixar film is already drawing a lot of attention. This may be due to the fact that it is once again emotionally powerful and has created a magical world of wonder and mysticism. Why not turn this into a follow-up show?
There’s a possibility that since this is one of the most recent projects from the studio, they could be eyeing Disney Plus as a potential launchpad for further adventures. Such a vast world deserves a little extra airtime.
BRAVE
One of the most underrated films from Pixar actually introduced the world to one of the newest Disney princesses. The Scottish tale of magic, family, and forgiveness is a pretty self-contained story, but there’s a lot that can be done with this world-building.
With so many other kings, tribes and villages, there’s a lot of potential here to continue to expand the world. The story doesn’t have to be about the brave princess, but perhaps one of the other kingdoms who are having similar struggles.
UP
This is also very much a one-off story, but one of the stories we haven’t been told is the adventures of Charles Muntz, who has invented a way to talk to dogs, made so many discoveries and now become obsessed with a bird.
Disney doesn’t do this very often, but a series that shows his spiral into madness and villainy would work in this context as it’s a way to improve upon the initial film and even humanize him in some small way. Plus we can get to see so much more of what nature has to offer on his travels.
WALL-E
A post-apocalyptic world full of robots, what’s not to like? The end of the film saw the humans return to Earth and try to start rebuilding it. A mini-series showing this could be really interesting and another educational opportunity for the younger viewers at home.
This is not only a great way to bring a little science to the streaming platform therefore, but it could be a complete reinvention from what the original film was. This can be like a sci-fi show that is tackling some big questions about the future of Earth, in an animated setting.
