It is safe to say that of all the fandoms that attended San Diego Comic Con 2019, the one that had the most to celebrate and the most active presence at the convention had to be Marvel. The comic book and multimedia superhero giant had a massive presence at the convention, from television and games to new comic book events and of course Phase 4 of the MCU.
With so many announcements made at this year’s event, it was no wonder many cosplayers chose to represent their love for Marvel. Let’s take a look at the ten best Marvel cosplays.
Deadpool
Somebody bring the chimichangas, because the first amazing Marvel cosplay on this list belongs to none other than the Merc with a Mouth, Deadpool. Made popular in recent years thanks to the stellar franchise led by Ryan Reynolds, the mutant anti-hero and mercenary who is known for his dark humor and ability to break the 4th wall remains one of the most popular characters from Marvel Comics.
Despite now being part of the Disney family thanks to the recent Disney acquisition of FOX/Marvel properties, the character is due to remain the same, sporting this film-accurate heroic look.
Captain Marvel
One of the most popular Marvel characters thanks to their recent arrival into the MCU has to be none other than Captain Marvel. Known as Carol Danvers, the former fighter pilot was caught in an explosion involving the Kree and the Cosmic Cube, giving her unlimited power and making her one of the most powerful heroes in the entire MCU.
Sporting her iconic suit and look from her film debut (and portrayed by Brie Larson), this cosplayer has captured the power and heroic look of the character from both the film and comic books themselves, making this cosplay truly amazing.
Miles Morales
A rather major and popular character in Marvel Comics has to be Spider-Man, but over the years many different versions of the character have appeared. Thanks in large part to both the comic book event and the film of the same name, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, one of the most popular characters to don the mantle has to be Miles Morales.
The first character of color to become Spider-Man, Miles originally hailed from the Ultimate Universe, but after the events of Secret Wars the character moved into the 616 Universe, making him a staple Marvel hero.
Daredevil
Probably the most popular of the street level heroes of the Marvel universe has to be Daredevil. The Man Without Fear spends his days as Matt Murdock, attorney and blind man who then spends his nights fighting crime as the masked vigilante known as the Devil of Hell’s Kitchen.
Blinded in a chemical truck accident as a child, he would grow up to fight crime on multiple fronts after losing his father to local mobsters for refusing to throw a fight. Now after three seasons of the popular show based on the character, cosplayers have paid homage to the character.
Mystique
A truly powerful, illusive and popular character out of the X-Men side of Marvel Comics has to be none other than Mystique, a mutant who’s past is as mysterious as her true intentions. Known mainly as a villain in the comics responsible for many altercations in the Marvel Universe, her popularity rose during the FOX/Marvel era of X-Men films, most notably when portrayed by actress Jennifer Lawrence in recent years.
This cosplayer brought the mystery and power of the character to life perfectly, showcasing a moment where the villainess shifted from a disguise to her true form.
Captain America, Iron Man, & Thor
Three of the most popular characters to emerge in the last decade thanks to their roles in the larger MCU have to be Iron Man, Captain America and Thor. Not only did they lead their own trilogy of films each, but established themselves as the core of the Avengers group as a whole.
Their most dynamic and powerful moment came in this year’s blockbuster film Avengers: Endgame, as the three notably fought side by side against Thanos. These cosplayers bring the characters to life perfectly, showcasing their look from the film and the friendship they all harbor for one another.
Venom And Scarlett Spider
Diving deep into the lore of the Marvel Universe and the history of Spider-Man in particular, this next cosplay image from the convention portrays none other than Venom and Scarlet Spider. Most people know Venom thanks in large part to his recent film and his iconic role in Spider-Man’s history. Many characters have taken the mantle, but most notable is Eddie Brock, an anti-hero.
Then there is Scarlet Spider, who has been both Ben Reilly (Peter Parker’s clone) and Kaine, the first flawed clone of Peter Parker who is left broken and yet very powerful in comics.
Mysterio
One of the most popular villains of Marvel Comics thanks to their recent appearance in the MCU has to be Mysterio, aka Quentin Beck. Thanks to his appearance as the villain of Marvel’s Spider-Man: Far From Home, (and portrayed by Jake Gyllenhaal), the character has never been more popular, especially in the world of cosplay.
The character in the comics is a special effects expert and stunt man in Hollywood who uses his knowledge to pull of robberies and fight Spider-Man, while the film version is much more complex. This cosplayer brought the villain to life really well.
Hulkbuster Iron Man
One of the more difficult cosplays to bring to life was featured at this year’s SDCC, and that is none other than the Hulkbuster Armor from the Avengers franchise. Used primarily in Avengers: Age of Ultron and Avengers: Infinity War, the armor was created by Tony Stark in the event that Bruce Banner lost control of his Hulk persona and needed to be brought down.
The armor later served as Bruce’s way of attempting to fight after the Hulk refused to come forward and fight. It is definitely one of Iron Man’s most popular models of all his Armor Sets.
Thanos
The most detailed, popular and nefarious cosplays to appear at this year’s San Diego Comic Con has to be none other than the Mad Titan Thanos. The villain of the MCU’s first chapter known as the Infinity Saga, he made his main appearance in the last two Avengers films, (Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame respectively).
Seeking to bring order to the universe by wiping out half of the life in it to better utilize resources, the Avengers sacrifice everything to stop the mad man. This cosplayer captured the overpowering stature and detail of the villain’s appearance to near perfection.
